The fuel crisis currently prevailing in the country will take at least two weeks to be sorted.
This was revealed this morning by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, Solomon Muyita while appearing on a national Television.
Muyita explained that whereas the fuel tankers had started moving and delivering the much awaited fuel, the local petrol stations had empty tanks so whatever is being delivered is consumed.
“The tanks are moving, fuel is being delivered but the petrol stations were dry, meaning whatever is delivered is consumed and the trucks have to go back to Mombasa for more fuel, by the time they deliver more fuel the other will have been consumed,” Muyita said.
He also revealed that the governments of Kenya and Uganda have created a Task Force to ensure that there is no longer congestion of the trucks at the border points by tomorrow, 25th January 2022.
Furthermore, government has encouraged Oil Companies to use the alternative route of Lwakhakha through Mbale to reduce on the congestion at Malaba/Busia entry points.
Besides the above measures, the Prime Minister, Robinah Nabanja has ordered that the weigh bridge near Busia be temporarily closed so trucks can move faster.
The revelation comes at a time when unavailability of fuel due to a strike by truck drivers over stringent Covid-19 restrictions at the entry points has seen some stations charge Shs8,000 per litter of petrol.
