Jaspher Awio, 29 years and a former journalist of the defunct Lira-based weekly Rupiny newspaper under vision group, was remanded for murdering his ex-girlfriend Monica Amongi.

Amongi’s decomposing body was recovered from her rented house two days after she was reportedly murdered.

It’s alleged that Awio slit his ex-lovers’ throat before cutting off her hands, a crime he later reportedly confessed to police.

Awio allegedly committed the heinous crime after realizing that Amongi had fallen in love with another man after their separation in August 2021 after their relationship went sour.

However, at that point, Awio is said to have unsuccessfully made several attempts to rekindle their relationship in vain.

Later, a decomposing body of Amongi, his longtime girlfriend was then discovered in her house on April, 2,2022 at Anai Ober cell, Anai ward in Lira City West Division.

Few days later, Awio, who had vanished, resurfaced and handed himself to Lira City West police station confessing to the crime.

The chief state prosecutor Peter Amalu, told court that the accused’s commitment papers for the crime were ready for him to be committed before the high court.

While presiding over the matter, His worship William Jonathan Wamimbi, the Grade one magistrate said his court did not have jurisdiction thereby Awio’s appearance was only to know the charges preferred against him.
