A section of Iteso community living in Abim District faced a surprised harsh eviction last night, 10th February 2021 in the hands of Uganda wild life authority game rangers.
The section is part of the 16,000 Iteso who were occupants in Abim District and fraudulently evicted out of the land early in December 2019. The then eviction was under influence of a fake investor through the Member of Parliament for Labuor County, Michael Ayepa-report from the state ant-corruption unit indicates.
The Iteso who had lived in Moru Lo gwangat land covering 24 villages and 7 parishes were evicted around 15th-27th December 2019 by Uganda wildlife Authority through the command of Captain Charles Okhuta on false claim that they were occupying the game reserve.
However those facing another fresh eviction were transported back to Abim in order to vote from various parts of Iteso by one of the candidates who won the parliamentary election.
According to Vincent Ochen, the Executive Director, Sugur Development Agency, the Iteso were later told to reoccupy their land in Moru Logwangant Opopongo Sub County where they were earlier evicted from after the elections.
“UWA team led by Captain OKhuta was warned not to evict them again until the State House Anti-Corruption Unit makes a report to the President,” Ochen said.
The warning could have landed on a hard rock since the said Commanders led their game rangers to carry out the eviction at night on the 10th February 2021. The eviction was allegedly carried out when the security that was given to the Iteso Community by the office of the Resident District Commissioner Abim went for another mission after Karimojong cattle rustlers attack in the nearby Sub county.
A report obtained by our reporter indicates that women were being undressed and others brutalized as they were being evicted.
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner Abim, Proscovia Acham confirmed the incident to this website in a telephone interview saying she got a distress call from the victims early this morning (11th February 2021).
She said that efforts were underway to rescue them from being tortured by UWA security officers adding that the situation in Abim is being perpetuated by people who are promoting tribalism and yet Abim is a cosmopolitan district.
“I am trying to get in touch with security to rescue them but only one thing hindering is network in Abim but we are looking for all possible ways of rescuing them,” she said.
Charles Okhuta, the captain who carried the 2019 eviction when called said he has been transferred out of Karamoja region and referred us to his superiors.
Kizza Fredrick Kayanja, one of the commanders of UWA in Abim when contacted by our reporter on 07829 29950 referred us to get a comment from police in Abim.
However, it’s alleged that two days ago Captain OKhuta was seen transporting game rangers to the barracks in Abim.
The eviction is still being perpetuated by the current MP Labuor County, Hon. Michael Ayepa who lost in the just concluded election.
Ayepa is said to be facilitating every process in ensuring that the Iteso are evicted from Moru logwangant in the pretext that the land is a game reserve.
