KATAKWI

The State Minister for Economic Monitoring in the office of the President has urged members of the public to always follow and monitor government projects in their areas.

Hon. Peter Ogwang made the call yesterday 25th January, 2022 in Palam Sub County in Katakwi District where he had gone to monitor the ongoing construction and rehabilitation of the Ngariam Palam- Ising community access road.

The Ngariam County legislator commended the community of Ngariam County for always being assertive through following government programs.

This happened when the community turned hostile to Sanix construction technologies limited for not raising the low spots to the level which can’t allow water to flood.

He said the road connects to Napak in Karamoja and it has cost the government of Uganda 640,855,150 to cover 13 kilometers. He added that he will lobby for more allocation of money so that the road will connect to Nabwal and Nabilatuk District. He thereafter handed over the bills of quantities to the committee elected to monitor the road construction.

The District chairman of Katakwi, Hon. Geoffrey Omolo said his office will not get tired of engaging the contracted companies in order to see them do good work.

Hon Okeng Abdu, the Secretary for Works & Natural Resources in Katakwi said a lot has to be done to overcome the problem of shoddy work from companies contracted.

Eng Andrew Echatu, the Katakwi District Engineer and a project manager for Legs said the work that started in November is 42 percent done and the scope of work is full gravel.

The road will be marramed from Zero level to 13 kilometers.

The community said their demonstration happened following hiccups but since they have been handled, they are ready to work closely with the contractor.

The funding is from the Ministry of Local government under Legs (local economic growth support) under Islamic Development Bank.

The work that started in November is expected to be completed by March 2022.

The Contractor was also accused of not working closely with the community project management committee chairman and members. They were also pinned for not handing over bills of quantities to the set up committee.
