Government under micro-scale irrigation system program is going to donate fuel and solar power irrigation pump systems to farmers in Sironko district.
According to Michael Wodeje, the Agricultural Officer of Budadiri Town Council and Buchambi Sub County in Sironko district, only farmers who grow value crops like onions, cabbage, coffee, carrots, among others will benefit.
He adds that government wants farmers to transform from subsistence to commercial farming by growing their crops throughout the year to boost their household incomes.
Wodeje also revealed that the government is going to pay 70% of the particular water pump which the farmer has applied for based on the distance of the water source to his or her garden.
The Agricultural Officer also urged farmers to embrace the project by registering with their particular sub-county agricultural officers such that they can benefit next year when the pumps will be distributed.
Silver Makwasi, a farmer from Budadiri Town Council welcomed the project saying that this is going to enable them grow crops throughout the year which has not been the case before.
Lydia Namataka, a farmer from Buchambi Sub County urged the government to raise the percentage to 100% such that all farmers can benefit.
