Retired UPDF Maj General Kasirye Ggwanga has died at Nakasero hospital where he has been admitted for weeks.
Gen. Kasirye was first admitted at the UPDF Senior Officers Diagnostic Centre based in Mbuya in early April 2020, sparking speculation that he had been arrested.
However, the UPDF spokesperson Brig Richard Karemire clarified that indeed, the retired officer was receiving treatment and not under any form of arrest.
In 2018 the 68-year-old Maj Gen Kasirye Gwanga was among Generals that were officially discharged from the UPDF at a function presided over by the Commander in Chief and President Yoweri Museveni.
Gen Ggwanga would then concentrate on commercial farming and was commonly known for fighting against deforestation.
The Retired Major General Kasirye Ggwanga’s health situation started deteriorating and he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit at Nakasero Hospital in May.
According to trusted sources Gen Kasirye’s condition worsened on May 25.
Kasirye was admitted to Nakasero hospital on May 18 and underwent a successful operation the following day after doctors reportedly discovered a blood clot in one of the vessels in his head.
During the time he was in the ICU, only a few family members could access him.
Kasirye was first rushed to Mbuya Military Barracks after getting a headache, where he received initial treatment before being referred to Nakasero hospital.
In 2016, Kasirye suffered lung-related complications and was admitted at IHK Namuwongo.
By the time he fell sick, he had launched a campaign to save forests in central Uganda. He would not allow anybody to cut trees from forests in the region. He would shoot at the tyres of the Lorries that he would find carrying logs. He had stationed himself at Nkene village, Maanyi Sub-county, where he has a farm.
