Field court martial sitting in KATAKWI has sentenced a UPDF soldier to 35 years imprisonment for murder by gun.
Private Moses Samson Omuge, Uganda people’s defense force soldier attached to 37th battalion was on Saturday evening sentenced to 35 years imprisonment with charges of murder.
Omuge was found guilty by 3rd division field court martial of seven members chaired by Col. Francis Kateraho that sat at Ngariam sub county headquarters for three days.
Kateraho said, his court found that Omuge committed his offence on 18th December 2021 at Apuuton village Achanga parish in Ngariam sub county by shooting dead a 28-year-old Estakusi ikabat known as Naboth Opio while he was looking for his lost animals at 8pm.
prosecution saw the offence Omuge committed as intentional which he said calls for maximum sentence of death.
Kateraho therefore, said, this will be a warning to other men in uniform who might be having the same behavior as that of omuge.
Meanwhile, Before court pronounced her judgment, Omuge, asked court for softer conviction because he was carrying out government orders.
Omuge added that, he was only trained for four months and asked for forgiveness form the court.
He added that, he now has a burden of over fourty family members who are depending on him.
When asked on the ill training of the UPDF officers, the 3rd division public relations officer Maj. Isaac Oware refuted allegations saying, it will not be an excuse of his ill behavior because he trained with hundreds of other UPDF officers.
