The Court of Appeal has appointed three judges to handle overwhelming number of appeal cases in eastern region at the Mbale High Court Circuit.

The three Justices are Hellen Obura, Christopher Madrama and Catherine Bamugemereire.

This was revealed by the Deputy Chief Justice, Richard Buteera while speaking to the media at Mbale high court premises today, 15th November, 2022.

Butera said that majority of the cases to be heard are those dating back to 2013 and 2018 which he said have consisted of the bulk of pending cases.

Buteera says that police and prisons have lamented over overwhelming numbers of cases adding that the backlog is now going to be reduced.

The in charge of the Mbale Remand Home, Sarah Amunyir urged government to increase transport means at the Remand Home by buying more vans because they have only one VAN that has to serve over 10 districts in eastern Uganda.

The Senior Resident Judge, Godfrey Namundi of Mbale high court called upon government to add them more judges and money to work on the high number of cases they’re receiving every day at Elgon region.

He however said that although government has increased the number of Chief Magistrates from 40 to 78, they still need more.
