The MTN foundation has handed over a 75 million renovated classroom block to Busia SS after 40 years without receiving any face-lift.

The 75 Million block renovated by MTN

Busia SS which is one of the oldest schools in the district and had taken 40 years without a face-lift, received the block on Saturday 27th March 2021.

While handing over the block, Brain Mbasa, the head of MTN Foundation said MTN decided to aid Busia SS because they want to support government in achieving its goals of reaching every Ugandan with quality education.

He revealed that Busia SS is one of the many schools around the country that have benefited from the MTN foundation interventions and over 50 schools were built and others refurbished.

“Over 50 schools around the country have benefited though our foundation as we try to come in to supplement government efforts where we can”

Mr Aggrey Mayende the head teacher Busia SS appreciated MTN for the support, adding that the school had become a risk to the students because of the poor conditions of the classrooms they had.

He also said that since 1979 the school had never received any face-lift or benefited from any funds, which are put in place by the government to build or renovate classrooms, which had made them think that the oldest school in Busia was forgotten.

“ It’s now 40 years, we still have old buildings all in bad shape, some are leaking but we see government building and renovating other schools around us but nothing done yet to change the face of Busia Secondary School .’ He said.

Mayende further asked the government and the local leaders to look for funds for Busia SS because it is still in bad shape.

He thanked MTN together with Peas for standing with the school and the people of Busia who take their children to get education from Busia SS.

Mr Alisamu Atangu, the District Education Officer Busia said that the environment at Busia SS has been un favorable to both teachers and the students because the classrooms aren’t enough for students, no laboratory and the bad conditions of the classroom blocks which were built 40 years ago.

He also said that due to the poor environment in the school even the performance of the students has been so bad compared to other schools around which has made many parents to take away their children.

“We have been getting few 1ST grades because we lack a lot of things in the school which can help our students to perform better,” he added.

Rex John Achila the Resident District Commissioner of Busia district (RDC)who was the guest of honor appreciated MTN foundation for giving back to its customers though renovating Busia SS.

“There are few companies that do give back to their people and we really appreciate MTN for the support and love they have for their customers,’ the RDC said.
