In what looks like a reprisal attack, local fishermen have killed three officers attached to Uganda People’s Defence Force Fisheries Protection Unit in Kaliro.
The attack that was orchestrated by local fishermen carrying out illegal fishing activities at Nansololo landing site in Gadumire Sub County, on Lake Kyoga took place on Wednesday 24th June, 2020.
According to the deputy OC CID Kaliro Central Police Station, Okoth Joseph, a fight ensued as the UPDF attempted to arrest the illegal fishermen. In the fight, two rakers helping the UPDF and the UPDF officer, John Odongo were killed.
A one Mwandha John, who was also in the company of the UPDF escaped unhurt.
Okoth however blamed the fishermen and locals for taking the law into their hands. According to Police, the deceased UPDF man was carrying a gun but its whereabouts remain unknown.
While commenting on the incident, most of the fishermen said they are tired of being witch hunted by the UPDF Fisheries Protection Unit claiming that many of their friends have been killed.
Police with the help of some fishermen removed the bodies and took them to Iganga Hospital Mortuary for post mortems as investigations go on.
The deceased Wafula Samuel, 38, hails from Namayingo district while the UPDF officer Odongo John, 35, hails from Pallisa district but were all attached to Kagulu anti-illegal fishing unit in Budiope County in Buyende district.
Recently, the Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries Committee, which is chaired by Grace Akech criticised the officers involved in the operations against illegal fishing practices for brutalizing residents. The committee members noted that they received information from fishing communities implicating the officers for killing two people in Namayingo District.
