A 22 year old student of King of Kings Secondary School in Iganga Municipality has committed suicide by hanging after eating school fees plus Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) Examination Registration fees.
Residents of Igamba Zone, Iganga Municipality woke up on the morning of Sunday 2nd June to find Kennedy Katyo hanging on dead on a tree in their compound.
The deceased sat for his Ordinary Level Examinations last year but failed miserably and was asked by his father, Bernard Katyo to repeat.
The father later told eastnews that his son insisted on joining one of the tertiary institutions to pursue a course in motor vehicle mechanics but he dissuaded him urging him to study until advanced level where he would join any university to do law.
“I had always wanted my only son to become a lawyer but it seems this was not his dream,” he said.
The deceased after being ordered by his father decided to repeat senior four last academic term but was only attending occasionally.
Katyo said they discovered at the beginning of this school term that their son had diverted Shs350,000 meant for tuition and UNEB registration to his own personal use.
“When we inquired as to where he had kept the money he simply became furious saying he was being forced to repeat a class he never wanted,” he said.
The LC One Chairman Igamba Zone, SaidiKakerewe described the deceased as a humble and reserved person they never expected to commit suicide.
Kakerewe urged students to always listen to advice from parents instead of taking their own decisions to avoid falling into similar problems.
The District Police Commander (DPC) Iganga, Davis Ndawula said the body of the deceased had been given to parents for a decent burial in Nawaikoke village, Kaliro district.
Ndawula urged young people to always seek advice from professional counselors to avoid similar incidents in future.
