Agnes and Rotich in one of their happy moments

Ibrahim Rotich, the main suspect in the murder of Olympian Agnes Tirop, has been arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa as he tried to flee the country.

After Agnes Tirop’s lifeless body was discovered in her bedroom lying in a pool of blood on Tuesday, her husband, Ibrahim Rotich, was nowhere to be found.

He is the prime suspect in snuffing out the life of the 2015 Cross Country Champion at her home in Iten on Wednesday.

Yesterday night (Thursday), Rotich was arrested after he was involved in a car accident. According to detectives at DCI, Rotich was speed racing when he rammed into the back of a lorry at Mlolongo, along Mombasa road.

Apparently, he was racing to get away from the police dragnet set up to capture him.

The suspect is currently being grilled by detectives at Changamwe police station for more details into the murder, before being arraigned in court to answer to murder charges,” DCI detectives said in a statement.

Father, Sister Speak Out

Meanwhile the sister to the deceased, Everline Chepngetich said she slept with her sister on Monday night before she traveled to Kapsowor on Tuesday.

However, when she traveled back on Wednesday, Ibrahim called her asking where she was. She then told him she had come back and was at Iten, the same neighborhood.

This apparently rattled Ibrahim who told her not to proceed to their home but board a vehicle back to the village giving the excuse that they had left for Nairobi.

Everline however, proceeded to the home at Iten and was told by neighbors that her sister had not moved out of the house. Curious, they budged into the house only to discover Agnes lying in a pool of blood.

The father also told the Media that they never blessed the Agnes- Rotich marriage because the latter made their daughter drop out of school when she was just at Form Two in 2016.

Tirop, 25, was part of the triumphant team that represented Kenya in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics; where she represented the country in the 5,000m race and finished fourth in the finals.

Ms Tirop, 25, was found dead on Wednesday in the western town of Iten, a training centre for top athletes.

She had finished fourth in this year’s Tokyo Olympic 5,000m final.

In 2019, she had won the 10,000m bronze at the 2019 World Athletics Championships.

Tributes have been pouring in for Ms Tirop from fellow athletes.
