Residents of Buwalasi Sub County in Sironko district have asked government to turn former Buwalasi Primary Teacher’s College into an institution of high learning.

In 2000, government through the Ministry of education phased out most primary teachers training colleges across the country including Buwalasi PTC.

Stephen Kabala from Buwalasi Sub County says that since Buwalasi PTC was phased out, buildings and other college properties are redundant or idle with no use.

He adds that if government turns those buildings into an institution of higher learning, the community members will benefit a lot.

Samuel Wetaka also a resident says currently the entire Sironko district has no institution of higher learning and they see this as an opportunity.

They argue that an institution of higher learning will improve on education standard in the district and reduce rates of school dropouts especially girls after finishing secondary education level since they have been traveling long distance to access education in Mbale.

Moses Nambale, the Sironko district education officer says that the district is partnering with North Mbale Diocese to register the college as an institution of higher learning.

He adds that the institutions will teach theological and vocational courses saying they have already paid 2 million shillings and still looking for more to clear National Council of Higher Education to be registered before studies start.
