Local Council Two Chairpersons from Bumbo Sub County in Namisindwa district have mobilised locals in 12 villages to open community roads as a way of easy accessibility in the area.
The roads that were opened yesterday 14th April 15, 2021 are in the villages of Bumbo, Sitiya, Nanda, Bumoto among others.
According to Simon Peter Musila, the LCII chairperson of Bukisati parish, Bumbo is one of the sub counties neighboring Mt Elgon National Park. He said the Sub County has fertile soils where people practice agriculture as their main income generating activity but they use donkeys to transport their products as the only means of transport.
He adds that the sub county has no single road which has forced them as leaders to act by mobilising locals to use hand hoes to open roads such that they can transport their agricultural products like tomatoes, onions, and Irish potatoes to the market areas at Bumbo Town Council and Mbale City.
Musila also adds that they face challenges in taking expectant mothers or sick people to the nearby Bumbo health center III or Bugobero health center IV for medical attention due to lack of roads.
James Soita, the LCII chairperson of Chebumbeyi parish also says that they have agreed with locals from village levels to voluntarily give land where roads are passing and involve in opening with hand hoes.
He adds that so far they have opened seven roads in 12 villages which connect the sub county to Bumbo Sub County where vehicles will pass to carry their agricultural products also saying that they expect to open more before the end of this week.
Anthony Wesonga and Simon Bwayo both locals from the area expressed their joy with the ongoing exercise saying that it is going to make their district accessible.
They also urged the Namisindwa district local government to always consider Bumbo Sub County during the opening of new roads in future since they also pay taxes.
However Peter Wabuya Mayeku, the LCV vice chairperson of Namisindwa district said that the district had planned to open two roads in the sub county in this financial year urging locals to be calm.
