President Yoweri Museveni, who is also the chairperson of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), has summoned the party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC).
Party officials say the meeting, which is expected to determine the next Speaker of Parliament, will convene today (May 17, 2021) at State House, Entebbe.
The party’s director for communication, Emmanuel Dombo confirmed the development, noting that several issues will be discussed by CEC members.
The CEC meeting comes against a backdrop of a series of secret meetings that have been going on to identify strong points that will make a case for the candidature of Deputy Speaker, Jacob Oulanyah against his boss, Rebecca Kadaga in the race for Parliament’s Speakership.
Already, the Clerk of Parliament, Jane Kibirige, has set May 24, as the day for the election of the speaker and deputy speaker of the 11th Parliament at Kololo Independence Grounds.
The meeting has been called just as Members of the 11th Parliament begin swearing in.
BACKGROUND
Ruth Nankabirwa, the NRM Chief Whip recently told the plenary chaired by Kadaga that in 2016, CEC had a consensus on which candidate the party should support this time round.
According to Nankabirwa, CEC while convincing Oulanyah to step down in favor of Kadaga agreed that 2021-2026 will have Oulanyah as the Speaker of Parliament. This is a position Kadaga is seemingly reneging on.
