Authorities of Soroti district have recovered pieces of vandalized railway materials from the locals who surrendered them up to the local Council One chairpersons.

The Soroti District Resident Commissioner, Patrick Okumu earlier on gave an ultimatum to all Soroti residents who vandalized the railway line and took its slippers to return or face arrest and subsequent jail sentence.

The culprits that will be arrested will face a charge and jail sentence of 10 years upon prosecution in the courts of law.

The ultimatum directed residents with the railway materials to handover the material to the area LC’s and have them collected in the gazetted place.

David Emaju LC1 Kelim B village Tubur Sub County says locals in his area for fear of arrests and prosecution immediately adhered to the directive and started returning the pieces slowly.

He reveals that some residents returned the materials at night and asked for anonymity to the security for fear of being arrested.

Simon Epasu, vice chairperson LC1 Kelim D village says his village collected whatever they had and whoever still possesses the materials does it at their own cost.

RDC Okumu states that security will pick up the materials from the gazetted areas and have them delivered to railway Authorities.

The operation is part of the government process to revive the Railway Transport as government moves to have a standard gauge railway line.
