Councilors at Mbale City have raised concern after counting five months without receiving their sitting allowances.

Speaking to this reporter yesterday 19th October, 2021, Abdallah Magambo, the Deputy Speaker of Mbale City Council, said since they were sworn-in in May this year, they have never received any single pay.

He adds that each councilor is entitled to get Shs700,000, Mayor Shs2million and executive members Shs800,000 per sitting.

Magambo revealed further the total 16 councilors have so far had two sittings bringing the arrears Shs31million.

Josephine Lunyolo Flavia, one of the councillors at Mbale city also says that it’s becoming hard for them to fulfil family obligations like paying rent, buying food among others.

She adds that they have given an ultimatum of this month only to Mbale city to pay their arrears or they will announce their next step.

Casim Namugali, the Mbale City Mayor confirmed the problem saying the non-payment has affected him and his executive as well.

He however appealed to the councillors to be calm saying they are working together with the Town Clerk to process their payment of all sittings.

When contacted, Kenneth Khatuli, the Assistant Town Clerk of Mbale city said that they are working tirelessly to make sure that before the end of October, all arrears of councilors are cleared.
