SOROTI CITY
There is currently tension amongst the Executive members of Soroti Main market and the allocation committee ahead of the unexpected planned visit of Soroti City Member of Parliament, Joan Alobo Achom.
MP Achom is expected at Soroti Main Market this (Tuesday) afternoon and will be meeting with vendors, Market Executive members and later address listeners via a market radio.
The Member of Parliament is also expected to handover aprons to the business community at Soroti Main Market in order to have a clean business community.
According to sources at Soroti Main market, the market leadership is panicking over the visit because they believe that the vendors may expose the rot surrounding the allocation of stalls in the market among other issues.
It must be noted that Soroti Main Market Vendors, the Market leadership and allocation committee have been embroiled in a row of over double allocation of lock-ups, stalls allocated to public servants among others.
“The leadership is in panicking moods and we are told they are planning to deny us (Aggrieved Vendors) to meet with the MP. Last time again they denied us to meet with the Minister of Local Government,” a source said.
He added that the Market leadership has on several occasions frustrated their efforts to meet with the leaders because they fear being exposed.
“It’s a good decision by Alobo and I pray that the leadership won’t block her from meeting us. These Market leaders do not wish us well,” another source also said.
During his last visit, the Minister for Local Government ordered that the Market authorities and the city sort out the market impasse within three weeks or else he will take his own action.
