99% of Namisidwa district population use fire wood as source of fuel compared to other regions who probably use Charcoal, gas cylinders and solar for cooking and other activities.
This was revealed today 8th February 2022 by the Namisidwa District Natural Resource Officer, Mwagale Michael while inducting all leaders from Namabya Sub County at Lwandubi Primary School on the role of leaders in environmental conservation. The leaders inducted included LC I & II Chairpersons, parish councilors and the sub county technical team.
He says trees are cut down for firewood and charcoal burning without being replaced hence causing landslides and mudslides during rainy seasons.
However, Godfrey Natwaluma the programs manager at Mount Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise (METGE) said, they have resorted to training local leaders in different parts of the Elgon region so they may reach the message to the residents on the importance of tree planting.
He adds that all tree species including fruit trees are given out to residents freely and urged them to pick from their nurseries.
Namabya sub county LC III Chairman, Wanzusi Brazil welcomed the initiative by METGE and asked more NGOs to partner with his sub county for effective development.
Bwayo Emma, the Namisindwa Youth Male Councillor who lobbied for the induction commended Mt Elgon Tree Growing Enterprise for recognizing the role of leaders in mobilization exercises.
He explains that most organizations ignore local leaders that’s why they fail to leave impact in communities. He asked leaders to embrace the project and conserve the environment since it benefits them.
