The State Minister of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) Hon. Hellen Adoa who is also the woman MP for Serere District has called upon the people of Teso sub region to embrace tree planting as a means of mitigating climate change.
Hon. Adoa gave her remarks in an exclusive interview with this reporter on Wednesday 9th March 2022. The call comes just a few days to the first Teso Environment Run scheduled for 19th March in Soroti City.
“This should be done every year because we have a big problem with climate change and if we don’t plant trees, then we shall be in big trouble. “ Adoa said.
Adoa who said that rains in Teso have not only become unpredictable but scarce urged the Teso community to wake and plant trees.
Adoa further called upon different stakeholders like ICU among others including the public to embrace the initiative of planting trees saying it is of great effect to the country and society at large.
Giving an example of Arab countries where it is treasonable to cut down trees, Adoa said it is important for people to value the environment.
“We are increasing in number yet the tree cover is decreasing, we need to do a lot: involve schools and every one, government schools have done it but are let down by those grazing animals around schools compounds since most have no fences, but the LC1’s can put in by laws that will help punish those who destroy trees as there is no rain without trees, let’s beautify Teso and our country large by planting down trees,” she adds.
All proceeds from the Teso Environment Run will be used in the environment conservation projects in Teso Sub Region.
