The LCIII chairperson of Bukyaibe Sub County in Namisindwa district has attributed the current increased cases of rape in the area by youth to energy drinks.
Nicolas Soita revealed this while speaking to our reporter in an exclusive interview at the sub county offices yesterday 24th March 2022.
Soita says that most of the youths in his area are idle and use drugs like marijuana mixed with energy drinks which give them lots of lust.
He adds that this month alone, he registered five rape related cases at his office and all have been forwarded to Namisindwa police station, two have been arrested and three are still on the run.
Soita also urged UNBS to phase-out some of these energy drinks since they are having components which increase sexual feeling in youths.
Samuel Mwekho, also a resident from the area, says that these youths commit these crimes on old people and young girls during night time especially at funeral places.
However, Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson while contacted declined to give a comment promising to get back after contacting Namisindwa DPC to get detailed information.
Last week, the Committee on Trade, Tourism and Industry directed Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) to withdraw their distinctive marks on all the energy drinks which have violated standards by containing caffeine and adulteration substances.
