The Uganda Musicians Association (UMA) electoral committee has set the 28th of June 2022 as the new date for the body’s general elections.
According to the press released this morning 14th June 2022, the elections will this time be held by secret ballot at one polling station in Kampala.
The date was agreed on during UMA Police Board meeting that took place on Friday 10th June 2022 where it was resolved that for the process to be seen to be fair, voting be done in one polling station and by secret ballot.
“Due to the high cost of organizing countrywide elections, we have decided that our members will have to come and vote from Kampala,” the UMA Police Board Vice Chairperson, Sophie Gombya said.
Gombya who revealed that it a tough decision for the Board to take hastened to add that it was the last option available.
On Monday 6th June, 2022 elections were called off in the last minute after, King Saha, one of the contestants for the Chair stormed the tally center with his lawyer claiming the process had been compromised.
The elections were canceled after the online system that was used for voting failed in the middle of the voting process at the main tally centre, at National Theatre in Kampala.
The system required all the registered artists to dial *260# in order to vote for a candidate of their own choice.
However, at 1:00PM, Airtel Users could not access the service, while candidates; Mansor Ssemanda alias King Saha, Ramathan Mutebi alias Lord Bitemu, who are contesting for UMA presidency and Irene Kusiima (Vice President) could not tally their votes.
