In a bid to clean the image of the institution, Police in Iganga has been urged to desist from corruption.
Mr Wandere Sadala, the RDC Iganga while speaking at the police decoration ceremony in Busoga East held at Fort Lugard Hotel Iganga today said the police has been branded an institution highly infested with corruption that it has lost its credibility even where due.
”So many complaints have come in regarding corruption by police officers. How police is extorting money the people they should be serving freely and I think this must end to rebuild the lost credibility of the institution,” Mr Wandera said.
Mr Wandera who was speaking during the decoration of 14 officers who had been promoted; the RPC Busoga East Region Ms Samuel Asiimwe and his deputy, SSP Kayongo Hamuza explained that corruption in the police force is one reason Ugandans no longer trust the institution.
”Ugandans are now taking the law into their hands, I want to urge you to stop degrading the police’s image and the uniform in which you booze and drink alcohol and get drunk,” Mr Wandera added.
He revealed that police officers are boozing and getting drunk in police uniform and I want to ask you to always take off the uniforms if you are going to the bars to drink.” Let us keep the institution’s image clean and honorable by Ugandans”, he said.
Deputy RPC Busoga East Region SSP Hamuza Kayongo urged police officers to venture into saving to prepare for their retirement.
He noted that there are many officers who do not even have a single room built as a house of their own yet they are in government service.
“Officers are earning a salary but cannot even construct a single room house! How are you going to survive in your retirement?” he wondered.
He further said that officers are fond of lavishly spending when they get their salary adding that most of them go to bars and drink but they can’t save this money or invest it in something for the future. Ends
