15 medical workers working at different private clinics and laboratories neighboring Mbale regional referral in Mbale city have been arrested and their premises closed.
The operation was carried out by Allied health professionals and state house health unity assisted by police in Mbale police discovered that their drug shops and clinics were selling government-labeled drugs.
Mr Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, says that this operation follows the continued outcry by patients at Mbale regional referral for lack of drugs at the facility and the doctors referring them to go and buy at neighboring clinics.
He adds that during the operation they also found government drugs, outdated machines, unqualified staff with no operational license, and expired reagents.
MrTaitika also says that the suspects are currently at Mbale central police station and would be arraigned in court on charges of stealing government drugs when investigations are complete.
The RCC Mbale Mr Ahmad Washaki told this website that the operation was done at Marie stopes clinic, East link laboratory, Montana laboratory Ebenezer laboratory among others all neighboring Mbale regional referral hospital.
He adds that the operation will continue to other clinics at Mbale town such that they can stop the theft of drugs in the government hospital. Ends
