Government has issued a directive banning all evictions during the Christmas and New Year Festive seasons.
The directive was issued this morning, 23rd December, 2022 by the Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development, Hon. Judith Nabakooza.
In her communication, Nabakooza revealed that all Resident District Commissioners and District Security Committees have been informed that between 23rd Dec 2022, and 6th Jan 2023, all eviction orders are on hold.
The Minister argues that unlawful people usually use this window as government offices are closed to harass tenants.
The directive has courted mixed reactions from the public with many questioning its legality and whether it has the President’s backing. Others who sounded like Landlords asked the Minister, “Under which law? But Minister whose houses are you swelling over? I have my private property and a tenant doesn’t pay and I should not evict? Get serious…” a one Abiyo fumed.
