A rival faction of Masaba cultural institution has beaten police surveillance and coronated John Amuram Wagabyalile as Umukuka III.
The stealthy coronation took place very early today, 18th March, 2023 at Masaba Cultural Institution offices located at Malukhu, Mbale City after police had earlier stopped the coronation slated to take place at Mutoto cultural site.
Yesterday police of Elgon region through its spokesperson, Rogers Taitika said that the function would not take place because government has not cleared either Amuram Wagabyalila or Mike Mudoma, the truly elected Masaba cultural leader.
Nelson Budaka Mafabi, the press secretary of Wagabyalila says that since the coronation is over they are now going to submit Wagabyalila’s name to the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development for confirmation.
He urged other Bamasaba to come together and forget the past fights and confusion they have been having about who is the truly elected Bamasaba cultural leader.
Peter Kusolo, the minister of security in the Wagabyalile camp has expressed his happiness with the function saying that it’s time for Wagabyalile to start uniting all Bamasaba.
However, Nelson Wedayila who belongs to Mike Mudoma’s camp, the rival of Wagabyalile has said they are going to court to challenge this coronation since it is illegal.
When contacted on phone, Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson declined to comment saying he can’t comment on the matter since the function was illegal.
By press time, there was heavy deployment of police at Masaba cultural institution condoning it off preventing any entry and exit.
This website has learnt that the heavy police deployment is to stop any activities associated with coronation including slaughter of bulls and celebrations.
