The Bukwo Woman District Member of Parliament National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer has gone through the pain of double jeopardy and is now in tears.

Hon. Chelangat Tete Everline was successfully elected NRM flag bearer in the 2020 NRM Primaries beating off stiff competition from the current Woman MP, Hon. Chemutai Everline who later stood as an independent.

Local politicians in Bukwo district believe Chelangat was rigged out of her victory in what they call the ‘chaotic 2021 parliamentary elections.’

Basing on this belief, Chelangat challenged her opponent’s victory in the high court which ruled against her petition. Unconvinced, Chelangat appealed to the Court of Appeal, the highest appellate court in election cases.

Chelangat lost at the Court of Appeal as well becoming one of the very few NRM flag bearers to lose in both courts.

Now with no Legal future to fight for what she is strongly convinced as ‘her stolen victory,’ Chelangat is resigned to paying the legal costs slapped on her by the High Court. The costs are payment to Chemutai as her costs in the petition.

In documents seen by this website, the High Court taxed Chemutai’s bill of costs and allowed at Shs62, 380,000 Million. However, Chelangat asked her opponent through her lawyers of Ochieng Associated Advocates & Solicitors to reduce the bill of costs.

In response, Chemutai through her lawyers agreed to a reduction of the bill of costs by Shs10M on condition that the remaining Shs52,380,000 is paid within one month from the date the amount was agreed to be reduced. The date should have elapsed on 27th March, 2023 but was pushed forward to 14th April, 2023 by mutual consent.

Suffering from diabetes, impoverished by the bruising campaigns and legal costs, ailing Chelangat is unable to raise the Shs52,380,000 within the stipulated period.

Her attempts to seek help from the Party’s Secretary General, Hon. Richard Todwong have not yielded fruits.

“I have tried to get help from the Secretary General, but I have not been attended to. Every time I meet Hon. Todwong, he says come back next time, and the next time has never helped me,” a sorrowful Chelangat told this website on phone.

The Bukwo local residents have now embarked on a fundraising drive to save their daughter from imminent imprisonment by launching, ‘BAIL OUT OF HON. TETE CHELANGAT’ led by Mr. Isaiah Chemongei as chairperson. His telephone contact is 0776751166 whereas Chelangat’s number is 0776585100.

“I appeal to all my well-wishers, my colleagues in Parliament and NRM Secretariat to come to my rescue, I am their flag bearer for Bukwo district, I need help to raise the Shs52,380,000 before 14th of April,” Chelangat told this website in a telephone conversation on 5th April, 2023.
