Busia Local Government has commissioned three micro-scale irrigation demonstration sites aimed at assisting farmers in improving food production in the district.
The demonstration sites commissioned in the areas of Masaba Village, Masaba Sub County in Samia-Bugwe Central, Budimo Village, Lumino sub-county in Samia-Bugwe South, and another at Busitema University in Samia-Bugwe North have cost the central government shs.72 million through the ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal husbandry with funding from the World Bank.
While commissioning the projects at the event held at Masaba Sub County headquarters on Wednesday, Michael Kibwika, the Resident District Commissioner urged the beneficiaries to safely utilize these demonstration sites in order to increase their crop production.
He has urged farmers to form clusters especially those who have neighbors who own big lands because under this project, the government will provide a 75% contribution to the selected beneficiaries and emphasis is targeting those with reasonable size of land.
He added that with such irrigation projects, farmers will be trained on how they can be able to harvest crops at any given time without solely relying on the traditional seasonal rain waters.
Kibwika also encouraged the community to interest itself in acquiring skills through this government funded program that is aimed at training farmers on the modern ways of increasing crop production in the fight against poverty.
