The Supreme Court sitting in Kampala has today 24th October 2023 upheld the sentences of former Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Local Government, John Muhanguzi Kashaka and former Principal Accountant Henry Bamutura.
The duo was sentenced for the bungled purchase of 70,000 bicycles meant for local council one and parish chairpersons ahead of the 2011 general elections.
The duo had appealed the decision by the Court of Appeal to uphold the sentence that had been handed over to them by Justice Catherine Bamugemereire in 2016.
Justice Catherine Bamugemereire sentenced the duo to 10 years imprisonment, being barred from holding public office for ten years and paying back over $1.7M, as ordered by the Anti-Corruption Court.
However, being dissatisfied with Justice Bamugemereire’s decision, they appealed before Court of Appeal which also agreed with the decision of the trial Judge and upheld the sentence.
Today, 24th October, 2023, the Supreme Court has upheld the guilty verdict and sentences for both former PS Local Government John Muhanguzi Kashaka and former Principal Accountant Henry Bamutura.
The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) will make sure they pay the government over $1.7M, as ordered by the Anti-Corruption Court.
