Prof. Mary Okwakol has left Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) where she has been the chairperson of the Examinations Board since 2014.
The handover ceremony that saw Prof. Okwakol hand over to Prof. Celestino Obua, the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology was witnessed by the Minister of State for Higher Education, Hon. John Chrysestom Muyingo.
Prof Obua was appointed by the Minister of Education and Sports that Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni on 12th October 2023.
In a brief statement released by UNEB today, 3rd November, 2023, the Examinations body says it pays tribute to the academician who was also the founding Vice Chancellor of Busitema University, one of the nine public universities in Uganda.
While bidding farewell to Prof. Okwakol, Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director said, they give thanks and praise to the Almighty God for the peaceful years that Professor Mary Okwakol has served as the Chairperson.
“I say “peaceful” because she was appointed and took over at a time when UNEB had gone through nearly two turbulent years in its governance,” He said.
Odongo added that Prof. Okwakol’s management epitomized the principles of good governance.
“Unlike cases we sometimes hear of in other institutions where the Board Chairpersons drift towards becoming part of Management and getting involved in the day to day running of the institutions,” he said.
Prof. Okwakol replaced Fagil Mandy in 2014 after the latter resigned because President Museveni had extended the contract of the then UNEB Executive Director, Matthew Bukenya.
