The Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, the Rt. Hon. Anita Among has today, 22nd November, 2023 declared more punitive actions against Opposition MPs that have boycotted plenary sittings.

The Opposition MPs are boycotting Plenary over what they call government’s reluctance to address their concerns on Human Rights abuses in Uganda.

Speaking during the Plenary, Anita Among first directed that Members who have chosen to absent themselves from the House shall not participate in the forthcoming East African Community Inter-Parliamentary Games slated for 7th – 18th December 2023 in Kigali, Rwanda.

She also ordered the Clerk to Parliament, to impose on MPs boycotting plenary sittings not to be allowed to attend Committees, and travels abroad.

She also told off MPs attacking her on social media over her decision to expel MPs who have chosen not to attend plenary sitting, saying she’s immune to their attacks because the impasse on human rights violations was created by the Executive, and not Parliament.

This follows an earlier warning that should the rebel MPs miss plenary sittings for 15 consecutive Sittings, she will be left with no option but to expel them from Parliament.
