SOROTI

Youth leaders across the six parishes of Asuret Sub county have been equipped with bicycles to aid their mobility in monitoring and mobilizing youths to embrace and effectively utilize government programs tailored for them.

This initiative came from Jacob Eyeru, the National Youth Council chairperson and has so far covered the entire Soroti county following numerous outcry from the youths leaders that monitoring programs like Youth livelihood, Parish development model and other projects of youths had become difficult for them due to lack of transport.

In Asuret for example, according to the sub county authorities, 14 youth groups have benefited from the 30% ring fenced for youth under the parish development model.

Speaking at the function on Wednesday, 3rd January, 2024, Eyeru said his mission to donate bicycles to the youth leaders is to ease their mobility in monitoring youth’s targeted programs.

He said the youth leaders should be able to mobilize and monitor programs of youths in their respective parishes.

“Today by the grace of God, we have completed the initiative to support youth’s beneficiaries in PDM by giving the leaders who sit in the parish committee bicycles. This initiative started eight months ago and it’s now a question of whether we have leaders as youths,” he noted.

Sarah Aguti, the Community Development Officer Asuret Sub County said that the youth council has been dormant in the Sub County and this affected the positive implementation of their programs.

She requested the youth leaders to ensure that they use the bicycles for the intended purpose by visiting the fourteen groups that have benefited from PDM and assess how they are performing.

“Now you have gotten bicycles, love your job, love your people and don’t just sit and keep quiet in the villages, come to the sub county and let us know how you’re progressing and the new plans you have,” she said.

Justine Onyait, the youth chairperson Asuret Parish said the bicycles have come in handy to solve the biggest challenge of mobilization and monitoring the youth beneficiary groups.
