The Elgon region has been ranked first countrywide in defilement cases according to the recently released police 2023 crime report.
This was revealed yesterday on Thursday, 7th March, 2024 by Damiono Kwatwesime, the Deputy Elgon Regional Police Commander while speaking to hundreds of parents of Mahayi seed secondary school located at Busoba Sub County in Mbale district during its annual general meeting.
According to Kwatwesime in Elgon region, Mbale district was leading which calls for serious intervention by both local leaders and police.
Francis Okongo, the Mbale District Police Commander says that these cases are on the increase in Mbale district because most parents negotiate with defilers rather than reporting them to police for legal actions.
He urged parents to always pay food fees for their children such that they can’t be tempted by men with small money who end up defiling them.
Naume Mwebaze, the head teacher of Mahayi seed school says that 90% of parents have refused to pay lunch fees for their children at school claiming that President Museveni told them not to pay anything in Universal secondary school UCE.
She urged local leaders to sensitize parents about advantages of paying food fee for the children at school.
Michael Werikhe kafabusa, former Member of Parliament representing Bungokho county also doubling as former minister for housing and Urban development urged parents to change their mindsets saying in other regions like central and Western Uganda, parents pay food fees and PTA money which has led their better performance in UNEB exams.
He says that him with Trinity Land Lord Organisation are going to procure four new computer sets with one million shillings such that they put more class rooms which will be used as A level class rooms since the school is planning to have A level section this year as they wait for government intervention.
