A medicinal new variety of sweet potatoes dubbed ‘Purple Fleshed’ is undergoing farm trial by National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO) and will be released in December 2024 by Ministry of Agriculture, Animal industry and fisheries.

This was revealed by Arnold Katungisa, a food biochemist working with NARO Namuloge on Thursday, 7th March, 2024 at Awoja River Site Third Edition Agricultural Exhibition that was launched officially.

The Agricultural event is running up to Sunday attracting different exhibitors with farm inputs, farm wares and value edition.

The potato contains anthocyanin which plays a cleansing role effect/ anti oxidant and it targets the diabetes, cancer patients, and those with high blood pressure.

When released, farmers can be allowed to access the vines. NARO also has two other high yielding potato varieties like Narrow spot 6 and Narrow spot 7 orange enriched in vitamin A. The narrow spot 6 according to Katungisa is high yielding with 32 tones per hectare.
