MBALE CITY
A team from State House has verified six main Mbale city Ghetto youth SACCOs as they prepare for the launch by the President before the end of this year.
The six main youth ghetto SACCOs that were verified on Friday, 15th March 2024 are Bugema Nauyo wakeup youth ghetto SACCO, Nkoma Ward Metal Welding Ghetto Youth SACCO, Mbale Garage Ghetto Youth SACCO among others.
Those groups were formed by youths who were based in the ghettos during the 2021 presidential campaigns after President Museveni promised to support them through SACCOs as a way of solving the problem of being used by the opposition in riots and other bad activities.
After the 2021 elections, the SACCOs remained in existence but have not been funded to date.
Major Emma Kutesa, the presidential advisor on ghetto affairs, visited each group with the aim of verifying and confirming their existence.
While speaking to the media during the verification exercise, Kutesa said that the purpose of his visit with other state house officers is to confirm the existence of the SACCOs and members.
Kutesa revealed that President Museveni will launch the SACCOs before the end of this year and support them with start-up capital.
He urged other ghetto youths to join the existing SACCOs and start saving such that they will benefit by boosting their household income.
Joshua Watsomu, the chairperson of Nauyo Bugema Ghetto SACCO says that after forming their SACCO in 2021, they thought the president was politicking but they are happy that a team from state house has come to verify it.
He says that most of his fellow ghetto youths are capable to do work rather than being used by politicians in riots but they only lack capital.
Abudala Mawanda Khakimu, the chairperson of Mbale garage ghetto youth SACCO urged the president not to send their money through district/City leaders saying they may swindle it.
