A bomb which exploded on Wednesday, 10th April, 2024 has claimed the lives of two young children and left two others injured in Kaabong district, northern Uganda.
The two dead have been identified as Ayollo Lokutai, aged 13, and Lokoel Komol, aged 12, both pupils at Kakamar Primary School.
The other two who were left with minor injuries are Meri Lomonyang aged 9, and Meri Lokiditoi.
It is reported that on Wednesday afternoon, the four boys left home to go and cut trees to fence the goat’s kraal before they landed on the abandoned bomb in Nakituriket village in Kakamar sub-county.
Ayollo then picked up the bomb and began playing with it, that’s when it exploded while Lomonyang and Lokiditoi were at a distance, engaged in cutting the tree claiming the lives of Ayollo and Komol instantly.
According to LC V chairperson of Kaabong district, Meri Jino, the unfortunate incident took them by surprise.
He added that the bodies of the deceased were transported to Kaabong Hospital for postmortem examination, while medical attention was provided to the injured pupils.
He further urged the local community to be vigilant and desist from picking metallic objects that are suspected to be explosive.
He added that people should report to the authorities about anything suspicious they come across.
