Government has said that the national celebrations for International Labour Day will this year be held at Mukabura Grounds – St. Leo’s College, Fort Portal City under the theme, “Improving Access to Labour Justice: A Prerequisite for Increased Productivity”.
This was revealed by the Minister for Labour, Gender and Social Development, Betty Amongi at a press briefing at the Uganda Media Center, Kampala today, 24th April, 2024.
Minister Amongi says that this year’s Labour Day theme resonates with the fact that access to labour, justice and promotion of occupational safety and health is a fundamental human right, essential for maintaining a fair and equitable labour market, protecting workers from exploitation.
The International Labour Day will be celebrated on Wednesday, 1st May 2024 and President Museveni is expected to preside over the function.
“As we celebrate the International Labour Day, it is crucial that we acknowledge the obstacles that prevent workers from seeking redress for disputes in the workplace and propose sustainable solutions for the same,” Minister Amongi says.
She also revealed that the Ministry of Labour will join the rest of the World to commemorate, “the World Day for Safety and Health at Work” which is commemorated every 28th April.
“For the year 2024 the World Day for Safety and Health at Work will be commemorated on 26th April 2024 in Mbale Cricket Grounds, Mbale City under the theme “Impacts of Climate Change on Occupational Safety and Health – Uganda’s Response,” Amongi says.
