MBALE CITY

Judicial officers from Eastern region have been trained on how to handle environmental related cases in court.

The training was organized by Greenwatch, an environmental rights advocacy nongovernmental organization which was established in 1995.

The exercise took place on Monday, 20th May, 2024 at Mbale Resort Hotel which attracted magistrates and judges from different courts here in the Eastern region.

Kagule Mwesigwa, the Executive director of Greenwatch says that they want to equip judiciary officers with skills and knowledge on how to handle cases related to the environment.

Mwesigwa also says that they are sure that these judiciary officers will handle environmental related cases in a professional manner such that they can protect nature when people go ahead encroaching on it.

Davis Mutesasira, a Lecture of law at Uganda Christian University who attended the training expressed his happiness saying this is going to curb environmental degradation.

He adds that people are raising buildings in wetlands and encroaching on government National Park Land and yet when arrested, they are set free without convictions.

Mutesasira also says that these judiciary officers are going to use the knowledge acquired in this training to deliver justice in short periods of time.
