A new police crime report covering the period of January – May, 2024 indicates that most defilement cases have been committed by teachers and Boda Boda riders.

Releasing the report on Monday, 10th June, 2024 at the Regional Block in Mbale City, SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson said in the last five months, police registered over 100 defilement cases every month from Bugisu region.

He says the number is certainly beyond that because some cases are illegally settled at the community level without reporting to police.

Taitika says that some suspects have been sentenced to prison while others are still on remand at different prisons in Bugisu region.

Denis Mulwaniregha Ephraim, the Resident District Commissioner of Sironko says that most Boda Boda riders convince young girls with free lifts ending up defiling them.

He also says that teachers promise free Marks to these pupils or students in exchange of sex.

The RDC urged parents to counsel their children especially girls such that these can cases can be reduced.

Juma Masera, the publicity secretary of Mbale city Boda Boda riders and owners association says the police report may not be very accurate.

He adds that not everyone who rides a motorcycle is a Boda Boda cyclist arguing that security and the general public have failed to differentiate.

Masera also says that someone can commit a crime while riding Boda Boda motorcycle yet he is not a Boda Boda rider.
