TORORO
A section of Members of Parliament from Tororo district tasked the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to resumes works on Rubongi bridge.
The contract to construct the bridge that acts as a border between the municipality and the district was awarded to China railways in the Financial Year 2021/22 by UNRA. But up to now, works have failed to be accomplished yet it was meant to end in that very financial year.
While speaking on Friday during roads committee meeting at Tororo district head offices, Geoffrey Ekanya, the Tororo North Member of Parliament said that the bridge is at the verge of collapsing yet it connects two key institutions of army barracks and hospital.
He says that later, the contractor abandoned the works due to failure by the government to pay up which is bad.
Ekanya says that when he asked the contractor about why works were suspended he alleged that none of the money was paid which forced them to leave works.
Sarah Opendi, the Woman MP for Tororo district says that she has tried to negotiate with UNRA to allow the district fuel graders and fix the bad part of the bridge but was told the contractor can take the government to court.
According to the leaders, the contractor left work after the government failing to honor his payment for the contract.
The legislator’s say that since the bridge was abandoned, Tororo local government has tried to reach out to relevant authorities to fix the infrastructure but in vain.
The legislators have now given the roads authority two weeks to fix the bridge or they close their offices in the district.
