Major Awany Opio in Somalia before his death

A Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) Major has been killed in a land mine attack from a battle front in Somalia.

Maj Opio Awany died on Sunday, 7th July, 2024.

The death was confirmed by UPDF Deputy Spokesperson, Col. Deo Akiiki in a brief statement on his X Handle today, 8th July, 2024.

“You have been a true representative of the Ugandan Flag Comrade Maj Opio Awany. With honor, we offer a final salute as your honorable soul lay at rest. You have been a true fighter for your continent Africa. Farewell Soldier, farewell.” Writes Col. Akiiki.

Information is still sketchy about how many soldiers died along with Major Awany, but a photo of the blown up Combat vehicle that was hit by a land mine shows that all occupants there in could have died.

Richard Todwong, the NRM Secretary General mourns Major Awany’s death in a tearful eulogy.

“I celebrate my brother, Maj. Opio Patrick Awany. Your dedication to protecting our country was your code and you approached your duty with unmatched passion. You bravely faced countless battles in the Central African Republic, Eastern DRC Congo and Somalia.” Todwong says in his X Handle.
