POPULATION CENSUS 2024: Iteso is Fastest Growing Tribe in Uganda

The Eastern Uganda tribe of Iteso spread across Mother Teso districts, Pallisa and Tororo has the fastest population growth rate in Uganda.

 

According to the Census results officially released by UBOS on Thursday, 3rd October, 2024 at Serena Hotel in Kampala City, the Iteso now ranked number four grew at a rate of 2.9% from the last Census closely followed by the Acholi at 2.8%.

 

The results show that the Iteso numbered 2,365,107 in 2014 but are now 3,146,079, indicative of a 2.9% increase.

 

The results however show the Baganda as the largest tribe in Uganda with a total population of 7,037,404 followed by the Banyankole at 4,200,782 with Basoga coming third at 3,703,535.

 

The Iteso are followed by Bakiga at number 5, Langi at number 6, Bagisu at number 7, Acholi number 8, Banyoro at number 9 and Lugbara at number 10.

 

The report ranks Karamoja region as having the most fertile women in Uganda. On average a woman in Karamoja region, which is located in northeastern Uganda, produces 6.7 children in her lifetime. This is followed by Bukedi (Teso inclusive), Busoga, Bunyoro and Toro with 6.5, 5.7, 5.5 and 5.3 children, respectively
