Authorities in Bukedea District have launched the second phase of wetland demarcation in the district.

The demarcation which was launched on Tuesday, 8th October is under the Climate Greening Fund.

The second phase was launched at Omiria wetland bordering the two sub counties of Kamutur and Kabarwa.

David Oluka, the Bukedea District Senior Environmental Officer told this website that the first phase of the demarcation covered the sub counties of Bukedea, Komuge, Malera and Bukedea Town Council.

“This Omiria Wetland connects From Bukedea Sub County to Kabarwa and Kamutur Sub County, so in this second phase, we are focusing on these two sub counties,” said Oluka.

During the launch, William Wilberforce Tukei, the Bukedea Resident District Commissioner warned the community residents against demolishing the demarcated poles.

“This exercise is moving countrywide for those who have been growing rice in wetlands to stop with immediate effect, these poles have coordinates and they are monitored,” said RDC Tukei.

Margaret Nalubega, the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer under the Ministry of Water and Environment says the project has three components of wetland restoration, alternative way of living for the affected persons and the way to the flow of information.

She said the affected farmers will be put in groups and given alternative ways of living.

“Let’s form groups through our village coordinators such that by the time we are coming, those affected should already be in groups,” said Ms. Nalubega.

Bosco Ocom, one of the farmers told this website that the demarcation of wetlands will now create space for farmers to graze their animals.
