TORORO
The senior Presidential mobilizer on poverty eradication and development, Pastor Robert Mbabazi has emphasized that it’s very easy for people to get out of poverty in Uganda due to the favorable environment and good government policies and developmental programs.
“It is easy to get out of poverty here in Uganda. The Parish Development Model (PDM) and commercial agriculture are some of the simple ways as you can see. To have goats, then you grow crops, all those are sources of money. Therefore, poverty here is ignorance when people don’t know what to do and when they get the wrong guidance,” he said.
He made the remarks on 18th December,2024 at Mukujju Sub-county headquarters in Tororo district during the graduation ceremony of over 70 youths organized by Makerere University, faculty of ICT.
Mbabazi assured the people of Tororo that the government will continue empowering them to fight poverty and improve their livelihoods through different programs like the PDM.
During the event, over 70 youths received certificates from Makerere University faculty of ICT after completing all modules of computer training.
The training was geared at equipping the beneficiaries with computer skills to help them have the existing opportunities.
During the handover of the certificates to the graduands at Mukujju Sub-county grounds, the LC3 Chairperson of Mukujju Sub-county Assa Wilson Bongo Songa, thanked the initiators of the skilling program stating that acquired skills has positioned the graduands to be Job creators.
He says the skilled youths will now help the parish chiefs that have been having challenges especially in data entry of Parish Development Model beneficiaries.
Patricia Nyafwono, a beneficiary from Merikit Town Council described the training as a game changer in her life saying that with the acquired skills she will be able to operate a computer with much ease . She says lack of computer knowledge has always locked her gates to employment opportunities that requires computer literacy.
Valentine Osuna, another beneficiary commended the Makerere University and well-wisher for the great gesture.
Meanwhile, Joshua Ochom Okongo, the main convener appealed to the beneficiaries to use the skills acquired to create employment for themselves and others saying the training is part of his own initiative to empower young people to position them to match the digital world.
Okongo mentioned that with the knowledge they should keep themselves on social media and other platforms that exposes them to the global world. He encouraged them to embark in farming through smart farming noting that the president has been moving around urging people to embrace coffee farming as a sustainable cash crop to bail them from poverty.
