The Uganda Law Council has rescinded its earlier decision and issued a temporary practicing certificate to Kenyan lawyer, Martha Karua.

This decision taken today Monday, 6th January, 2025 allows Karua to represent Dr Kizza Besigye and Hajj Obeid Lutale before the General Court Martial tomorrow.

Besigye and Lutale, who were abducted in Nairobi, Kenya in November and returned to Uganda, face charges related to security and unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Reacting to the decision, Uganda Law Society president, Isaac Semakadde says he is happy with the Council’s decision to rescind the earlier ruling adding that Karua should be holding her Practicing Certificate by the end of business today.

Uganda Law Council had on 9th December, 2024 denied Karua, Dr. Kizza Besigye’s Lead Counsel, a Temporary Practicing License.

Uganda Law Council is mandated to act as the overall Regulatory Authority for the entire legal profession and Legal Aid Service Providers in Uganda.

In a brief media interview on Monday, 9th December, 2024, Karua revealed that the Uganda Law Council denied her the temporary practicing license, on grounds that application is politically motivated, rather than purely professional.

The Uganda Law Council requires foreign lawyers to obtain a temporary practicing certificate to represent clients in Ugandan courts.
