TORORO: Morukatipe View Primary School Land Controversy Takes New Turn

Teddy Makola, the Municipal Education Officer, has revealed that the controversy surrounding Morukatipe View Primary School land has taken a surprising turn.

Speaking to this reporter early this week, Makola says the issue has been sent back to square one after her office received guidance from the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets (PPDA).

The controversy began in December 2023 when Morukatipe View Primary School received compensation from the Standard Gauge Railway Project.

However, the community was unhappy with the land procured for the school, claiming it was outside their catchment area. Despite the disagreement, the municipal authority proceeded with the procurement process.

The community, unsatisfied with the decision, invited the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to intervene. The unit arrested and arraigned Makola, the headteacher, and a councilor before court, and they were remanded.

In a recent development, the PPDA has advised canceling the initial land bidding and instead focus on the community’s catchment area.

A new 4-acre piece of land has been identified in Amagoro A North Makonde Cell Eastern Division. Makola noted that local leaders have now been involved in the process to ensure a resolution that works for everyone.

The community is eagerly awaiting a resolution to the controversy, which has been ongoing for months. With the PPDA’s guidance and the involvement of local leaders, it is hoped that a solution will be found soon.
