MBALE CITY
A fire broke out in Mbale City last night, causing significant damage to businesses. The incident occurred on January 16, 2025, at around 11:30 PM along Naboa Road, Plot 46, South Central Ward, Industrial Division. Two shops were completely destroyed—an electronics shop and a boutique—while 12 other shops were saved.
According to SP Rogers Taitika, the Elgon Region spokesperson, the fire broke out at approximately 11:29 PM in a commercial building that housed various businesses.
The building, which belonged to the late Takhuli Edward, is now managed by his widow, Takhuli Miriam, and their three sons: Matanda Andrew, Wamangala Christopher, and Magomu David.
SP Taitika further stated that SP Kamayo Rashid, the Regional Fire Officer, and his team were quickly dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, the fire was at the free-burning stage, but the firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 11:59 PM.
The building had 14 rooms housing businesses dealing in clothes, salons, electronics, and bars. While two shops— the boutique and the electronics shop—were severely damaged, the rest of the shops were saved, and the owners were able to remove their properties. Fortunately, there were no injuries or loss of life reported.
Taitika suspects the fire was caused by a short circuit, and the incident has been officially recorded under SD Ref: 16/16/01/2025.
