The National Resistance Movement (NRM) publicity secretary for Tororo District, David Ofwono Apiauni, has died this morning at Nakasero Hospital in Kampala.
The death of Mr Ofwono was confirmed by close relatives and his wife, Evelyn Abbo today, 21st January, 2025.
According to Ms Abbo, the deceased had been unwell for months. He was initially admitted to the 3Levers Cancer Centre Hospital in Najjera before being referred to Nakasero Hospital when his condition deteriorated.
Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to multiple organ failure at the age of 50.
Residents and colleagues remember Ofwono as a fearless and outspoken leader who was deeply committed to advocating for the interests of the local population in Bukedi.
“Apiauni was courageous and feared none. He passionately addressed issues affecting the district population,” said Albert Amula, the deputy Resident District Commissioner of Tororo.
David Oweka, a political commentator and manager of T FM Radio, reminisced about the intellectual debates they had with Ofwono.
“Apiauni was brilliant and highly focused. He was an intellectual in every sense, and engaging him in a debate and my morning radio show was always challenging, no matter your level of education,” Oweka said.
Stephen Isogol, the NRM Administrative secretary for Tororo county political District, praised Ofwono for his dedication to the party.
“He was an NRM cadre who deeply loved the party. His aggressive mobilization efforts will be dearly missed,” Isogol said.
Ofwono’s body remains in Kampala and is yet to be transported to his ancestral home in Kasipodo Village, Kayoro Sub-county, Tororo.
