The territorial police in Busoga North have issued a clarification dated 22nd January, 2025 regarding a viral story circulating on social media, which alleges that a police dog traced suspected thieves to a police station reception.
The story, initially reported by Daily Monitor, has garnered significant public attention and sparked mixed reactions.
The incident in question relates to an aggravated robbery that took place in 2023. However, the police have confirmed that some aspects of the original report were inaccurate.
The police had previously clarified the facts, and they are now reiterating these details to clear up any confusion.
According to the police, the robbery occurred on February 16, 2023, around 4:00 AM, when two unknown assailants attacked guards at an MTN shop in Kaliro.
The attackers disarmed one of the guards, broke into the shop, stole phones, and abandoned a rifle behind the shop.
The guard, identified as Teko Lomero Moses, promptly reported the incident to Kaliro Police. A team of detectives was dispatched to the scene, and a sniffer dog was brought in to assist with the investigation.
The dog followed the scent and led the officers to the same guard who had reported the crime. At that time, the guard was still at the police station, and the dog rested in the spot where he had been sitting.
ASP Michael Kasadha confirmed that both the guard and his colleague were apprehended and detained. The stolen rifle was recovered, and further investigations led to the arrest of additional suspects, who were later arraigned in court.
The police have strongly urged the public to disregard the misleading story, which they believe was intended to tarnish the reputation of the Uganda Police Force. They reaffirm their commitment to serving the people of Uganda with integrity and professionalism.
