MBALE CITY

Mbale Resident City Commissioner, Asumin Nasike, has rejected a proposal by Mbale City Mayor to reinstate a tax on Taxis that was scrapped by President Museveni in 2021.

The tax, which ranged from 1,000 to 10,000 shillings depending on the distance, was abolished during the President’s campaign of 2021.

However, Mbale taxi drivers have been complaining about the poor state of the Taxi Park, citing the lack of rubbish collection.

In a meeting called by Mbale City Mayor, Cassim Namugali, last week, the taxi drivers’ spokesperson, Bashiru Mabajja, expressed their concerns about the dirty state of the Park.

Mayor Namugali suggested that reinstating the scrapped tax could provide the necessary funds to clean the Park.

However, Nasike on Monday, 27th January, 2025 rejected the proposal during an interview with this reporter stating that the presidential directive cannot be overturned by anyone in the country.

She says instead, the city must explore alternative ways to fund the cleaning of the Taxi Park.
